Pandemic Resulted in Growth of Seized Illegal Goods

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Finance Ministry's director-general of customs and excise, Askolani, revealed on Thursday, August 26, 2021, that the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a growing number of confiscated illegal goods. In 2020, the directorate general recorded 21,900 confiscations of illegal goods. 

This number grew from the previous years. Back in 2019, the directorate general recorded 21,000 confiscations, while in 2018 the directorate general recorded 18,000 confiscations. The total value of illegal goods confiscations in 2021 is worth IDR 12.5 trillion.

Compared to last year, the total value of confiscated illegal goods only amounted to IDR 6.3 trillion.

"The tendency in 2021 and up until July is a 50 percent increase compared to 2020," said Askolani, as reported by Bisnis.com.

Out of the wide variety of illegal goods, he said that illegal cigarettes recorded the highest number constituting 41 percent of the total number of confiscations in 2020. The second most smuggled item is alcoholic beverages with 7 percent of the total number, while narcotics constitute 7 percent of the total number, and illegal vehicles constitute 6 percent of the total number.
