Thousands of Gojek Drivers Go On Strike Over Incentives Cut

9 June 2021 13:46 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Rental Fleet Association (PAS), which is an association supervising online and rental transportation, on Wednesday said that there are roughly 100,000 Gojek drivers who will go on strike from June 8 up to June 10. The association’s secretary general Wiwit Sudarsono said the strike is sparked by the incentive cut for GoSend same day deliveries.

“The incentives have changed to Rp1,000 for every nine packages sent, Rp2,000 for every 10-14 package deliveries, and so on,” said Wiwit to Tempo on June 9.

This new incentive policy is lower compared to the previous version where five GoSend deliveries can get a driver a Rp10,000 incentive and Rp45,000 for every ten package deliveries.

According to Wiwit, the incentive cut came after Gojek merged with Tokopedia, where the official announcement was made on June 8. This incentive cut is the main drive for the Gojek drivers to go on strike, or as they say ‘offbid.’

However, Gojek management denies that its latest incentive hurts the drivers’ income as the Gojek corporate communication VP Audry Petriny said the incentive adjustment opens the opportunity for GoSend drivers to receive incentives for every delivery package they send.

“This policy is our attempt to even out the number of partners that can obtain the incentive,” said Petriny in a text message. “This opens the opportunity for more drivers to make additional income as we recover from the pandemic.”
