TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police suggested the provincial government gradually reimpose the vehicle restriction policy based on the license plate or odd-even policy during the enforcement of the community activity restriction (Micro PPKM).
Deputy Director of Police Traffic Unit adjunct senior commissioner Rusdi Pramana said the suggestion was voiced given the traffic density and frequent congestion.
“We recommend the restriction on motorized vehicles with the odd-even system be implemented in stages. The priority is given to roads with a quite high traffic jam, and of course while providing adequate public transportation facilities and infrastructure,” said Rusdy in a virtual discussion on the traffic policy in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.
He explained that the recommendation was issued after the police conducted a review and concluded that the traffic congestion in the capital city must be addressed immediately, considering that the volume of vehicles particularly on the Sudirman-Thamrin streets saw a surge up to 115.1 percent without the policy.
“The traffic volume increases by 115.1 percent when the policy is not implemented on July 13-19, 2020, compared to when it is imposed on March 31-April 5, 2021. Congestion also causes fatigue and affects emotional health so that it disturbs drivers’ concentration while driving,” Rusdi said.
Rusdy further argued that when the odd-even policy is reimposed, several issues need to be addressed, such as the rising number of Transjakarta users that may cause a crowd of 11-12 percent.
