TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The activity of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra has increased as the volcanic mountain was observed to produce incandescent avalanches and launch volcanic ash columns as high as 4-5 kilometers on Tuesday, March 2.
The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported today that there had been 13 incandescent avalanches from the crater that was observed since 06:42 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
PVMBG says Mount Sinabung had been active since March 1 and produced white thick ash clouds on numerous occasions with varying heights from 50-meters to 1-kilometers high. There were also 37 recorded explosive eruptions.
Low frequency and hybrid earthquakes were also recorded from the volcanic mountain since the first week of February which is followed by incandescent avalanches. Constant observations indicate a fluctuation in its pattern but none has indicated a threatening increase in the livelihood of residents living in its vicinity.
PVMBG believes that Mount Sinabung could potentially produce explosive eruptions despite the current condition and has recommended a level III status to be implemented in the mountain’s vicinity which sets a ‘danger zone’ to be within 3-kilometers of the mountain’s vicinity measured from its crater.
