TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Covid-19 patient from Depok, West Java, died on January 3, after 10 hospitals refused to treat the patient. The report came from Lapor Covid-19 that received the information from the patient’s family.
“The patient died in an online taxi,” said a Covid-19 volunteer team of BantuWargaLaporCovid19, Tri Maharani in a written statement on Friday, January 15.
Tri told Tempo that the patient needed a ventilator to breathe. The patient visited ten hospitals while in a state of shortness of breath in an online taxi. But those hospitals refused to treat the patient since the ICU wards were all full.
He suspected the patient had been infected with the virus for more than eight days and that the patient, unfortunately, did not receive first aid.
"It’s impossible for someone to have a shortness of breath on the first-day s/he is infected with Covid-19," said the toxicologist.
Since the pandemic hit Indonesia, Tri has helped many people looking for Covid-19 hospitals. Referral hospitals in Jakarta Greater Area (Jabodetabek) started to get fully occupied in September 2020.
The number of Covid-19 patients who need hospital treatment was declined when Jakarta Governor pulled the emergency brake during September-October. But it went high again from November 2020 until today.
