TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A toxic relationship contaminates your self-esteem, your happiness, and even the way you see yourself and the world. It does not always start out destructive, but it usually is a bunch of underlying issues that build up until one of both parties begin feeling trapped or controlled.
“We may consider them as microaggressions,” said a psychologist Perpetua Neo in a special episode of the Mind Body Green podcast.
Read on to recognize four subtle signs of toxicity in a relationship as quoted from Mind Body Green.
- "You are so sensitive."
When your partner manipulates you or gaslighting. With this technique, they try to gain power over you and so over time, you second-guess your own reality.
- "I am more experienced than you," or "I am older than you."
When your partner always positions themselves as your savior, see themselves smarter, wiser, and more experienced than you, they make you "need" them for everything.
- "I am suffering more than you."
When your partner believes that their pain is more important than others’. This is also an indicator that your partner has covert narcissism as they enjoy the attention from suffering.
- "I don't like this person."
When your partner tries to steer you away from your friends or family members just because they do not like that person. This also indicates that your partner wants themselves as your one go-to source.
Being aware that a relationship is toxic is vital given that those bad acts start to show in small doses. However, it does not necessarily mean bad news when your partner says the four phrases.
Psychologist Neo suggests all be aware of the signs of toxic relationships and always be honest to yourself because your feelings are valid and your partner should embrace them.
