TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, condemned the series of protests that occurred in numerous areas in Jakarta, which were motivated by the enactment of the omnibus job creation law.
Mahfud asserted that there are other means of expressing public dissatisfaction against a certain law or regulation, which is through a constitutional court judicial review.
"[Protests] against a government law can be expressed by filing for judicial review at the Constitutional Court," Mahfud said during a press conference on Thursday, October 8, 2020.
Mahfud claimed that the government respects freedom of speech and aspirations expressed by lawful citizens regarding the passing of the job creation law.
However, Mahfud added that expressing the freedom of speech and aspirations can be done through peaceful ways that equally respects the rights of other citizens and in a way that maintains public order.
