East Timor parliament demanded the United Nation to take responsibilities for the shootings of Major Alfredo Reinado, Presiden Ramos Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao earlier this year, as the UN was in charge of security in the country when the incidents occurred.
East Timor urged the UN to form an independent team to investigate the incidents and report to the East Timor's Attorney General Office for further inquiry.
The UN rejected the parliament's recommendation, saying that their investigation report must be published directly without having to report to prosecutors and the government of East Timor.
Legislator from the Social Democrat Party, Fernando Gusmao said the UN can not escape responsibilities from the incidents as the international community knew that the UN was in charge for security in East Timor.
“Why the UN refused to form the team? I think it was because they are affraid that the investigation result would be different compared to that of the prosecutors. I am suspicious that the UN have a political interest on East Timor,” said Gusmao.
Inacio Moreira from the Fretilin and Aderito da Costa from CNRT also had the same tone on the matter. “The UN did not want peace in East Timor, they want the situation remained unstable to be able to keep their presence here,” Inacio said. Former Prime Minister Mari Alktiri also urged the UN to form an investigation team.
