TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An academician at the Muhammadiyah University of Kupang, Ahmad Atang, has stated that the repatriation of ex-ISIS Indonesians, could be a ticking time bomb in the future.
"As an Indonesian citizen who chooses to become a follower of ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), (they) would have an agenda to wage war against the nation, (this) can be a time bomb if Indonesia maintains their existence in the midst of society," the academician said in Kupang, on Friday, February 7, 2020.
According to Ahmad, ISIS is a group of jihadists who declare themselves to be soldiers of Allah, fighting for the Caliphate. This group, said Atang, clearly has an agenda of fighting against the nation.
“Who can give any guarantee that after returning to Indonesia, they will not carry out activities against the country?"
He suggested that the repatriation of former ISIS Indonesians requires careful thought, in order to ensure the benefit for the society, nation, and state. "It is true that they are Indonesian citizens, but it must be understood that they have chosen to become ISIS followers, and have an agenda of war against the nation."
