TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The sports and youths ministry has confirmed that national sports week PON 2020 will still be held in Papua, despite the establishment of this year's Popnas (national student sports week) and Peparnas (national Paralympics week) in the region are likely to be canceled.
"There is no problem with PON because we also don't want to pressure Papua further," said the ministry's secretary Gatot S. Dewa Broto in Jakarta, Saturday, August 24.
According to Gatot, his office will not press Papua Administration to run Popnas dan Peparpenas this year. The eastern region of Indonesia is unable to organize the events due to security issues and the readiness of the infrastructure.
The sports ministry hopes that the cancelation will set Papua to focus on the preparation of PON national sports week 2020. "Let Papua concentrate to get ready for PON," he added, saying that they ran out of time to prepare for the Popnas and Peparpenas.
Meanwhile, Gatot said his side is currently trying to solve the vacancy and approach several regions potential to replace Papua in hosting Popnas XV and Peparnas IX this year.
The PON National Sports Week 2020 is scheduled to be held from October 20 to November 2, 2020, in Papua.
