TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service Agency called on the city’s residents to actively partake in preventive measures against potential fires, as the region is entering the dry season.
“Increase awareness, please immediately report once a fire is detected as [a quick response] will suppress the number of losses caused by fires,” said Rompis Romlih, the head of operations at the west Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service Agency on Sunday.
His public warning came in light of a fire at the Pelita School in Tambora, West Jakarta, on Sunday morning, July 7. The fire engulfed the school’s 140-square-meter area, to which 20 firefighter trucks were dispatched. The fire was put out in 30 minutes.

Initial investigation suggested the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. He warned that areas such as Tambora and Cengkareng in West Jakarta are prone to fires as both are known as densely-populated areas.
The firefighters also face their own obstacles during drought as water resources are often depleted, forcing them to resort to other sources of water in the vicinity.
