TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Road Transportation Sector of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Masdes Arouffy, said that the Jakarta Administration will revise the Public Order Regional Regulation (Perda Tibum) which prohibits the operation of becak (pedicab).

“The formulation is being made. I cannot confirm with the revision (if the pedicab will not be banned), because the leading sector is not the Transportation Agency,” Masdes said on Tuesday, October 9.

According to Masdes, the authority to prohibit the operation of becak was owned by the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) and the Legal Bureau. “But indeed, there is a discourse to accommodate the operation of becak,” he said.

As many as 1,685 becak are reoperating in Jakarta, although there is no legal protection that allows them yet. They are members of the Jakarta Becak Union (SEBAJA).

Sebaja Coordinator Rasdulah said he had known about the Jakarta Provincial Administration’s plan to revise the Perda Tibum. He hopes it will immediately be issued so that the becak can operate legally again in Jakarta.
