TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives will summon the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to clarify the lifting of tsunami early warning after a magnitude-7.4 earthquake hit the Central Sulawesi provincial capital of Palu, Friday. Based on the information received by the House Commission V, there was a time interval between the lifting of the tsunami early warning and the tsunami.

"We will summon BMKG Chief Dwi Korita Karmawati to clarify the lifting of tsunami early warning in the aftermath of the earthquake in Palu, Central Sulwesi," Head of the House Commission V Fary Djemi Francis stated on Monday.

He said the BMKG chief must take responsibility for it. "We demand the reason why the tsunami early warning was lifted. They must clarify it," he noted.

Although the BMKG chief had clarified the lifting of the tsunami early warning on the media, the House Commission V will continue to summon the BMKG chief, he stated.

An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale rocked Palu last Friday at around 5.55 p.m. West Indonesia Standard Time. The BMKG had earlier remarked that the quake had the potential to trigger a tsunami.

However, the agency lifted the tsunami early warning a few minutes later. Soon after the tsunami early warning was lifted, high sea waves hit several areas, including Donggala, devastating several housing complexes and killing several residents.
