Basoeki Abdullah Museum Displays Paintings of 19 Young Artists

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Basoeki Abdullah Museum, located in Cilandak, South Jakarta District, opens an exhibition Spirit Portrait that displays paintings made by 19 young artists. The exhibition will last for a month starting September 25 until October 25, 2018.
The museum head Maeva Salmah said on Tuesday during the opening event the exhibition takes side by side of Maestro Basoeki Abdullah's portrait paintings with paintings made by Indonesian active young artists with their perspective on the paintings of the present era.
“The paintings have been curated by Agus Dermawan. [The artists] come from various regions such as Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, West Nusa Tenggara, and Yogyakarta,” Maeva added.
She explained Basoeki Abdullah is one of the maestri of Indonesian painters. Basoeki’s artworks especially the portraits become references and inspiration for young painters.
“The paintings have been curated by Agus Dermawan. [The artists] come from various regions such as Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, West Nusa Tenggara, and Yogyakarta,” Maeva added.
She explained Basoeki Abdullah is one of the maestri of Indonesian painters. Basoeki’s artworks especially the portraits become references and inspiration for young painters.
“Basoeki Abdullah has a remarkable talent in painting portraits. He brings a good name of Indonesia and himself to the world in art. In 1948, he wins an art contest held for the coronation of the Dutch Queen Juliana in the Netherlands and bested other 87 European painters,” she said.
Furthermore, the curator Agus Dermawan said the preparation of exhibition has started since six months ago. He mentioned one of the artworks that he concerned to the most was the painting made by Balinese painter Wayan Diane, the portrait of Bung Karno as Wisnu on a horse carriage in the midst of the sea of animals with the presence of an angel Ratna Sari Dewi.
