TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The tragic death of Palestinian volunteer paramedic Razan Najjar (21) has gained worldwide attention, including from the Indonesian Health Ministry. Razan was shot dead by an Israeli soldier while attempting to evacuate injured people during a demonstration at the Gaza-Israel border on Friday, June 1.

“We, the paramedics, regret that this incident occurred. Paramedics does not attack, does not bear weapons in the field; they are saving people,” said Diono Susilo Yuskaran from the Health Ministry at the Japanese Embassy on Monday, June 4.

Diono reasoned that members of the International Red Cross or volunteer paramedics must not be attacked since it is a serious violation against human rights and international law.

Unfortunately, human rights violations against medical workers continue to happen, including the passing of Razan. Furthermore, Diono hopes that the international community would take a serious stance in subduing the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Previously, the United Nations' human rights board produced a resolution on the severe human rights violations conducted against Palestinians by Israeli military operations in the Gaza strip. Indonesia itself was one of many countries that supported the resolution.

Furthermore, Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said on Friday, June 1, that Indonesia must support and push for Palestine’s independence.
