TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A medical volunteer who helped deal with the wounded during a rally in Gaza, Razan al-Najjar, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers while attempting to evacuate victims from a border fence on Friday June 1, 2018.

At the scene of the protests in Khuza'a, witnesses said that Razan approached the fence on Friday wearing a medical vest and with her arms raised to show the 100-meter Israeli soldier that she posed no threat, as quoted from Aljazeera on June 3, 2018.

She approached the fence to evacuate a wounded protestor who lay on the other side of the fence. After she managed to cut a hole in the fence, suddenly Razan was shot in the chest with a sharp bullet. A bullet went through her chest from the back of her vest.

The 21-year-old Razan al-Najjar became the 119th Palestinian killed by Israeli forces since the protests demanded that the Palestinian right to return to their land when expelled in 1948. While more than 13,000 others were wounded.

UN officials on Saturday condemned the killing of medical volunteers on the Gaza border, saying that witness reports indicated she was wearing clothes that clearly identified her as a medical officer.

"The killing of medical staff who were clearly identified by security forces during the demonstrations was very disgraceful," said Jamie McGoldrick, UN Humanitarian Coordinator, as reported by the Times of Israel.

While responding to Razan al-Najjar's shooting, UN envoy to the Middle East, Nikolay Mladenov, wrote in Saturday 2 June, that "medical workers #NotATarget!" And "Israel needs to reduce its use of force and Hamas needs to prevent incidents on the Gaza border fence."
