DPR Wants Terrorism Bill Discussion Finalized before Eid

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- Asrul Sani, deputy chairman of the Special Committee on the Terrorism Bill, said the draft's discussion can be completed before the Eid.


Asrul, who is also the Secretary General of the United Development Party (PPP), made the statement on Monday at the home of Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto after a discussion with the minister and officials of parties that support Joko Widodo.

The meeting resulted in an agreement that the Terrorism Bill revision should be completed during the plenary session that begins on May 18 until before the Eid.


According to Asrul, the revision of only has one more thing to complete; which is the definition of terrorism; whether to include the phrase "political motives, ideology etc." as part of the definition, or to exclude it and make it part of the explanation.


Meanwhile, Wiranto said that discussions over the TNI's involvement and the definition of terrorism in the draft have been completed. The minister said there is no more to be debated, and the Terrorism Bill will soon b passed into a law.

The meeting between party officials with Wiranto to discus the Terrorism Bill was held to respond to the series of bombings in East Java in the last two days.


Suicide bombers attacked three churches in Surabaya on Sunday morning, May 13. Later that evening, a suicide bombing occurred in an apartment building in Sidoarjo. On Monday, May 14, suicide bombers attacked the Surabaya City Police Headquarters (Mapolrestabes).
