TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called for an end to the numerous verbal wars that has saturated the social media realm and urged the people to unite despite having political differences. He also called on the Indonesian society to not be disassociated with each other.
“Just observe social media, with its years of stigmatization, abuse, defamation, slanders, and hate speeches. Do we want this to continue?” said President Jokowi while closing the extraordinary congress of the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) in Jakarta today.
Jokowi also urged every political party to actively educate the general public upon the values of ethical political practices. “Political parties are obliged to put an end to these problems,” said the president.

He further asserted that Indonesia was a large country with 260 million citizens, 17,000 islands, 714 ethnic groups, and more than 1,100 regional languages, which must be preserved and not be ruined by political agendas.
“There is really no other country in the world as diverse as Indonesia,” Jokowi said.
Within the following two-years, Indonesia will face two of the country’s major political agendas: the simultaneous Regional Head Elections in 117 Indonesian regions this year and the 2019 Presidential Election.
