Anies Baswedan to Revoke Golf Course Tax Cut

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan plans to revoke a regulation that grants 50 percent tax cut on property tax for golf courses. He said that there will be no more discounts for the elite sporting activity.
“It will be returned to normal. There will be no more tax cut,” said Anies Baswedan at Hotel Grand Cempaka in Central Jakarta on May 5.
Anies Baswedan referred to the Governor’s Decree No. 141/2014 on property tax cut for golf courses that was ratified on September 16, 2014, while the capital was led by former Governor-turned-president Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
Furthermore, Anies explained that taxes are one of many instruments in showing partiality. He viewed that it is not fair considering that despite receiving discounts, golf courses still get paid immensely by players and tenants.
However, the Decree initially granted property tax cut for golf courses because these venues are considered to be effective as green open spaces and water absorption areas, which lack in Jakarta.
He said that property tax cut would be better granted for other buildings such as schools or social foundations. “This is, again, a problem of partiality. We will solve this matter,” said Anies.
Anies Baswedan did not get into details of when the Decree will be revoked and only replied by claiming that a replacement decree is being prepared.
