Jakarta Quake: BMKG Says Aftershocks Possible

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that aftershocks are likely to happen, albeit weaker.


BMKG Meteorology Deputy Mulyono Rahadi Prabowo said they cannot give an estimate how strong the aftershocks if they occur, would be.

"There is a potential for aftershocks, but the strength will weaken, he said on Tuesday, January 23.


At 13:35 Jakarta time, almost all areas of the capital were hit by an earthquake. The BMKG said that the earthquake is centered in Banten region.


"The epicenter of the earthquake is at 7.23 South Latitude and 105.90 East Longitude, 77 kilometer Southwest of Pelabuhan Ratu at a depth of 61 kilometers," Mulyono told Tempo, Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Mulyono said that the earthquake was a 6.1 Magnitude.

The BMKG's head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center Moch Riyadi said in a written statement said a tectonic earthquake occurred in the South Indian Ocean region of Java.


He added that the epicenter was located at sea at a distance of 43 km south of Muarabinuangeun City, Cilangkahan Regency, Banten Province at a depth of 61 km.
