South Sulawesi Claims Readiness to Meet National Needs of Rice

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Sulawesi (Sulsel) Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo declared that their province is ready to meet national needs of rice.


"We have 82,000 tons of rice stock, take it to other provinces, with the President’s orders, take it from here," Syahrul said after supervising the rice availability in traditional market and Makassar Logistics Agency (Bulog) on Saturday (13/1).


Syahrul made such a statement in the event of significantly rising rice of the commodity in several provinces.


Furthermore, Syahrul went on, on January 17, Bone, Soppeng, Wajo dan Luwu Regencies will begin harvesting with crops spreading across 350 hectares of land.


"We estimate to produce 1,500 tons in total until March," he added.


Sulsel, he continued, to support national food security has produced 2.6 million tons of rice surplus and it is ready to use for any provinces in need.


Meanwhile, Agriculture Ministry Directorate General (Dirjen Kementan) Sumarjo Gatot Irianto stated that big harvest begins in January.


"So we do not want the price to plunge, we must avoid over suply," he reminded.
