TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan could be a “dark horse” candidate for the presidency in the 2019 election, challenging the incumbent Joko Widodo (Jokowi). In a survey conducted by Indo Barometer in November, Anies is voted the third most favorite candidate for president.

Met at Jakarta City Hall, Anies Baswedan calmly commented on the survey.

“I just started working in Jakarta. I currently doing my job and am focusing on anticipating floods and complaints from residents,” Anies said yesterday.

Governor Anies earlier told Tempo in an October interview that he would not run for president in 2019.

“My destiny is to become a governor. I have to take care of Jakarta. Please don’t make me address issues outside of the capital city. The fact that Pak Jokowi took office as the president less than five years after being elected governor has nothing to do with me. It’s his destiny,” Anies Baswedan said at his house in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta.
