TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman guaranteed that there will be no food shortage from November this year to January 2018.
Minister Amran explained that to prevent food shortage in Indonesia, farmers need to expand their growing area to one million hectares. If the growing area only reaches 500,000 hectares, food shortage is bound to happen.
"After we carried out an evaluation, the current average of growing areas is one million hectares of growing which used to be 500,000 hectares. As a result, we are convinced that we are safe for the next three months. There will be no food shortage," Amran said on Friday, Sept. 15.
He affirmed that Agriculture Ministry has evaluated the growing area, especially during the critical growing period July-August-September, and it has reached one million hectares. Thus, food stock is declared safe and we will not face a shortage.
Agriculture Minister is optimistic that Indonesia can get through the end of the year without food shortage with the same situation in 2016 in which there was no shortage.
