DPR building

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Executive Director of Voxpol Center Pangi Syarwi Chaniago said that the House of Representatives (DPR) members should be ashamed of their request for a new office building.

“The President, as a leader of the country never even planned or requested [for a new] State Palace even though it is so old. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives always asks for a new building every year for various reasons,” said Pangi Syarwi on Wednesday, August 23.

Previously, the DPR members submitted a plan worth Rp604 billion to construct a new building at the Senayan complex that was mentioned in the 2018 state budget draft meeting.

Pangi considers the move inappropriate at a time when the House is proven to be underperforming. Especially since the Global Corruption Barometer survey shows that Indonesia’s legislative is the most corrupt institution in the last three years.

He also explained that the DPR reflects a negative image more than it reflects the positive one. The Indonesian public is well-informed about their activities that mostly about internal conflicts; often asks for aspiration funds and now asks to construct a new building without considerating the country’s current financial condition.
