Jokowi: Blocking Telegram Social Media Not Decided Based on Whim

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo stated that the decision to block Telegram social media app was not taken on a whim but it was a carefully and rationally thought out decision.


"Government has long observed Telegram and we are a country that prioritizes the safety of our nation, our people," President Jokowi said on Sunday, July 16.

He mentioned that thousands of contents in Telegram can disrupt the safety of our nation and people. He further added that there are other social media that people can use.


Regarding a statement that there are measures taken by the social media management to filter the contents, Jokowi revealed that in reality there are thousands that get away to use it to build communication with other countries and engage in terrorism.

In terms of communication initiative between the application management and the government, Jokowi claimed that Communication and Information Ministry has done those measures, including blocking Telegram.
