TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that as many as 1,087 disasters happened from January until May this year.
BNPB Head Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the disasters left 166 people dead and missing, 313 people wounded, and 1,036,362 people displaced.
"The disasters also caused damage to 14,117 houses, in which 2,578 houses sustained severe damage, 2,315 houses sustained medium damage and 9,224 houses suffered minor damage. In addition, 453 public facilities were also damaged, including 266 schools and Islamic schools, 161 worship houses, and 26 health services," Sutopo said Friday, May 5.
He added that the natural disasters have degraded people’s welfare and most of the disasters happened in villages where the residents are middle-income and low-income people.
"Natural disasters cause absolute poverty in which farmers who are trapped in farmer business credit will have their debts bigger when a disaster damages their agricultural fields," he added.
