TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of National Development Planning or Bappenas Head Suharso Monoarfa said natural disasters triggered by climate change in the country resulted in losses of at least Rp22.8 trillion per year.
In the 2020-2024 period, Bappenas estimated that climate change would cause potential economic losses of Rp544 trillion. “That's why policy intervention is needed,” he said in a national dialogue at the Bappenas office, Central Jakarta, on Monday, August 21, 2023.
He said the majority of natural disasters occurring in the archipelago were hydrometeorological disasters. In the past 10 years, the number of deaths caused by these disasters was recorded at 1,183.
The potential losses came from coastal flooding, water shortage, and ship accidents, as well as decreased rice productivity, increased cases of sensitive diseases, and others.
Besides, Indonesia is currently experiencing a temperature rise of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. Suharso emphasized that this would eventually disrupt all living systems by affecting water availability and triggering droughts, disease outbreaks, and natural disasters.
It was also estimated that more than 100 million people around the world would become poor. Suharso mentioned that based on the water forum in Sweden, some 4.8 to 5.7 billion people would experience a water crisis by 2050.
