Jokowi Hopes ASEAN Migrant Worker Protection to be Signed Soon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo said that migrant workers protection is an important element in ASEAN community. Therefore, Jokowi expects migrant workers protection document can be agrreed on this year.


"I hope migrant workers protection document can be agreed on this year to prove that we do care,” Jokowi claimed in ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Philippine International Convention Center, Manila, Phillipine, on Saturday (29/4).


Jokowi explained that currently there are 6,8 million ASEAN migrant workers. In 2015, contribution of remittance generated from migrant workers reached US$ 58 billion.


"They made real contribution to ASEAN economy,” Jokowi added.


Despite the case, a lof of them suffered from inhumane treatment and they fell victim to human traficking dan their rights are not respected, Jokowi said.


Hence, he added, this calls for the role of ASEAN countries to protect the migrant workers.


"I expect that AIPA delegates will lend support to this initiative," Jokowi urged.


He added that this forum is a great opportunity for executive and legislative authorities to exchange aspiration and coordinate to implement important agendas in ASEAN community.
