TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Immigration Office of Indonesia's Soekarno-Hatta Airport is recorded to have prevented 6,672 people from being trafficked through non-procedural shipment of migrant workers. The number comprises 6,342 people prevented from leaving in 2023, and 330 people in January 2024.
"This is our effort to prevent and save Indonesian citizens from being victims of human trafficking," the head of Soekarno-Hatta Immigration Subki Miuldi said on Wednesday 31 January.
Subki said that the increasing international travel traffic at Soekarno-Hatta Airport requires Immigration officers to always increase vigilance.
For this reason, he said, officers are always provided with knowledge and updated information. "With certain methods, as well as collaborating with the community at Soekarno-Hatta Airport such as PT Angkasa Pura II and the Airport Police," he said.
Soekarno-Hatta Immigration also won awards for the third-best Migration Crime category and the second-best Immigration Administration Action.
Subki said that the Soekarno-Hatta Immigration office has slapped seven foreign nationals with criminal sanctions and deported 213 foreign nationals.
Wilando Situmorang, head of the Enforcement Section at the Soekarno-Hatta Immigration Office, said that most of the deported foreigners were Nigerians with 59 people, Chinese 25, United States 23, and the rest were from Saudi Arabia, India and Palestine. "The most common reasons for their deportation were overstaying, misuse of residence permits, violating immigration regulations, and fake dual citizenship passports," Wilando said.
