TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Delegation of the Finance Ministry's Tax Directorate General (Tax DG) visited the National Tax Agency (NTA) in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, to discuss the implementation of the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEoI). The meeting was a follow-up from the previous one held on March 21, 2017.
"We discussed AEoI-related topics and anti-tax evasion efforts with the base erosion and profit shifting [BEPS] scheme," Jakarta Tax Office head Muhammad Haniv said in a press release on Thursday, April 13, 2017.
According to Haniv, the Tax DG's delegation was led by international taxation director John Hutagaol and was welcomed by NTA's director of international operation Yoshiro Ikeda and NTA's director of EOI Tadahiko Ban.
"During the meeting, both tax authorities discussed preparations made by the two countries to implement AEoI standards that will be launched globally in September 2018," Haniv explained.
There are at least four requirements that must be met by each country or jurisdiction to participate in the AEoI, namely the availability of international agreement for AEoI, domestic regulations on AEoI implementations, financial information secrecy and security, and technology information readiness to conduct data exchanges.
In addition to the AEoI, the Tax DG and NTA also discussed the signing of multilateral instruments (MLI) in June 2017 in Paris, France. Indonesia and Japan will meet minimum standards related to the MLI and other criteria. Both countries have agreed to effectively utilize the MLI in a bid to have a common understanding related to tax evasions with recommendations of BEPS actions.
