Flood Drowns Three Districts in West Sumatra

TEMPO.CO, Padang - Flood have inundated three districts and city in West Sumatra, March 28, 2107, due to a high-intensity rain since Monday night.


"Three districts and cities are affected by the flood, namely Solok District, City of Solok, and Sijunjung District," said Pagar R. Negara, an official of Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of West Sumatra, Tuesday, March 28, 2017.


According to Pagar, in the City of Solok, the flood occurs in Koto Panjang and Kampai Tabu Karambai in Lubuk Sikarah Subdistrict. A number of houses in Tanah Garam, Tanjung Harapan Subdistrict also inundated by the flood.


Pagar said a bridge is heavily damaged and one house is destroyed in Sijunjung District.


"The flood has also covered dozens of houses, killed a buffalo and two goats, as well as submerged dozens of hectares of rice field," he said.


In Solok District, the flood occurs in Koto Baru and Selayo of Kubung Subdistrict, as well as in Muaro Paneh, Bukit Sundi Subdistrict. The BPBD is currently collecting data following the impacts of the flood.


The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency has predicted the rain will fall all over the West Sumatra areas on Tuesday, March 28, 2017. Rain with a medium to a high-intensity of rain will occur until night.


"As the impact of the weather, we must be aware of disaster potential in Agam, Limapuluh Kota, Solok and eastern parts of Sijunjung," said the BMKG’s Observation and Information Department head Budi Iman Samiaji on Tuesday, March 28, 2017.
