TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Kebayoran Baru Sector Police Comr. Teguh Wibowo, suspected that the cause of the of the falling elevator in Blok M Square was a snapped cable.
Despite his strong suspicions, Teguh cannot yet confirm about the definite cause of the accident. "It is indicated that the elevator [cable] had snapped [causing the elevator to fall] from the 7th floor to the basement," Teguh said on Friday, March 17, 2017.
Teguh said that the victims of the incident have been taken to a hospital. However, Teguh claimed that he is unaware about the exact number of victims in the incident.
"No clear information on the number of the victims yet, we will confirm this to [Pertamina Hospital] and the Kebayoran Baru clinic," Teguh added.
According to one of people riding in the elevator, Sutoto (45), the accident was mainly caused by excessive load. "As soon as everyone entered, [the elevator] was full. It immediately plunged straight down," Sutoto explained.
