Elections Safe, Police Chief Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said that the regional heads elections went well and relatively safe.
"I received reports from the regional police chiefs in Indonesia, everything is relatively safe and controlled," he said at the voting station in Gambir, Jakarta, today, February 15.
However, Tito also received reports that some areas were late to start the voting because of delays in ballot paper distribution. "In Papua and islands areas," he said.
Tito said the police and security officers helped distributed the ballot paper.
When asked if there are reports of money politics, he said not yet.
The General said that 325,000 security officers were deployed to guard and secure the election process; 150,000 police officers, 15,000 TNI officers, and the rest are civilian defense officers or 'hansip'.
In Jakarta, the Jakarta Regional Police chief Insp. Gen. Mochamad Iriawan also said that the election process in the capital went smooth and safe. By 11.00 this morning, the police have yet to receive reports of suppression or money politics.
Today, Indonesians are voting for their regional heads in 101 provinces, regencies and cities.
