TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia Police Chief General Tito Karnavian has urged people not to be easily provoked with regard to Islamic mass organizations plan to conduct a demonstration in the capital city Jakarta on November 4.

He said on Sunday that ahead of the regional elections next year the activity could be exploited by certain elements for political purposes.

"Do not easily be provoked or conduct violence. Please do not be anarchic," he said on the sidelines of a parade of 190 flags from countries participating in the Interpol general assembly.

He said he hoped demonstrators could carry out the rally peacefully. "If it is done peacefully we will certsinly guard it. Do not be anarchic or conduct violence. (If you do) we will certainlt take legal action," he said.

Tito said he did not know yet how many would take part in the rally but confirmed that security measures have been prepared for it.

Rumors have it that Islamic organizations would conduct rallies at the City Hall, the State Palace, the National Monument Square and several other locations in East and North Jakarta, Bekasi and Tangerang to protest against Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in connection with recent speech in which he had been accused of having allegedly insulted Islam.

General Tito Karnavian held a closed door meeting with the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command on Saturday evening to discuss security measures in connection with the planned rallies.

He also discussed security measures in connection with regional elections that would be held simultaneously in 101 regions in the country.
