TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police personnel had been dealing with a riot that broke out at Trisakti University campus on Jalan Kyaitapa, Tomang, West Jakarta. The riot was allegedly sparked by the planned inauguration of new Trisakti University rector carried out by the foundation on Wednesday noon, August 24, 2016.
Jakarta Police Public Relations Division chief Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said his office had deployed 300 personnel to secure the campus since 6 AM. “We also provide assistance in the mediation between the foundation and the [campus] security officers,” Awi said in a press release, August 24, 2016.
Awi said that Police oversaw mass mobilization of campus security officers followed by a rally staged by students. Moreover, police also found 200 sharpened bamboo sticks and clubs in a car.
Police later combed the campus area and arrested several people. “We have yet to find out who the owner of the sharpened bamboo sticks is,” he said. Police personnel had been standing guard at the scene to maintain order together with the foundation.
