TEMPO.CO, Kuwait City - The Kuwaiti authority has decided to deport an orangutan to its home country Indonesia after it was found to be taking drugs.

The drug-addict orangutan was found by a police officer who was checking a car that was involved in an accident in Kuwait City last week. During the inspection, the police officer found an orangutan with its owner.

"Police questioning the owner after the accident found that he was under the influence of drugs. His monkey was also intoxicated," local paper Al-Rai reported, as quoted by Daily Pakistan on Tuesday, July 26, 2016.

The Kuwaiti Interior Ministry handed over the animal to the General Commission for Agriculture and Marine Resources, which kept it in an animal park to ensure its safety. The ministry also established contacts with the Indonesian Embassy, urging the 'deportation' of the one-year old orangutan to live in its original habitat in Sumatera.

As one of the countries signing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES), Kuwait is legally responsible for sending endangered species to their natural habitats. Last year, the Kuwaiti International Airport Authority managed to an attempt to smuggle six orangutans and deported them to Indonesia.
