TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economy Darmin Nasution said that the current price of sugar, which reaches up to Rp 16,000 per kilogram, is too high.
Darmin hoped that by the end of this year, sugar price can be reduced to no more than Rp 12.500 per kilogram "although sugar supply in the global market is slumping due to climate change."
Darmin explained that to lower sugar price, the government will encourage the National Logistics Agency (Bulog) to increase sugar supply by purchasing supplies from sugar companies.
"If necessary, the government will increase [sugar] import quota to make sure that supplies and prices can be maintained," said Darmin on Tuesday, July 26, 2016.
In the near future, the government will also organize a more comprehensive food policy to maintain availability while stabilizing various commodity prices, including rice, beef, sugar, and corn.
