MPR Speaker Call on Approval of Sexual Violence Draft Bill

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Zulkifli Hasan, speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), is calling for the immediate ratification of the bill on sexual violence. This call is a reaction to the recent murder-rape of a teenager in Bengkulu.
Speaking on the sidelines of a national safari event in Cirebon, Friday, May , 2016, Zulkifli said he condemns the rape and murder of Yuyun, a 14-year-old teenager from Bengkulu.
"We will push the bill to be ratified immediately through factions in the House of Representatives (DPR)" said the National Mandate Party (PAN) chairman.
The rape case has sparked concern and anger from many. Zulkifli said that the criminals must be punished severely.
"What they did is very barbaric," Zulkifli said.
The MPR speaker said that cases like these are highly related to the abuse of pornographic behavior, and the consumption of alcohol and drugs. He stressed the importance of addressing to situation down to its core.
"We are on an emergency level of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as pornography," Zulkifli said.
