Flood Cuts Off Riau-West Sumatra Road

TEMPO.CO, Pekanbaru - The western traffic lane that connects Riau and West Sumatera provinces has been cut off since river water from Kota Baru Village, Pangkalan, West Sumatera, has overflown due to rain in the last few days and spilled to the road for about one meter.



“Vehicles have not been able to go through for more than seven hours,” said Rozifa, a Pekanbaru resident, on Monday, February 8, 2016.



The flood caused a long traffic jam and chaos the traffic since vehicles being stuck on the road. “The flood is thigh-high and cars are unable to move,” said Rozita, a resident in the region.



Up until morning, the water has yet receded. “Thousands of houses in the village are also flooded. There were Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency officers evacuating local residents,” Rozita said.



Based on information from local residents, heavy rain over the past few days in the region have caused the water overflew. Leni Rika, resident of Bukittinggi, said since Sunday, it has been raining heavily in West Sumatera. “It’s been raining since yesterday,” said Leni.
