Jakarta Provides 800 Free Carts for Street Vendors

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Agency will purchase 800 carts for street vendors (PKL). “The carts will be bought through e-budgeting, not auction,” said Cooperatives Agency chief Irwandi on Tuesday.
The government will distribute the carts to several locations. The 800 carts consists of 300 units for Kota Tua vendors, 150 units for Central Jakarta and South Jakarta each and 200 units for East and North Jakarta.
During the discussion of 2016 provincial budget and budget ceiling priority documents, Jakarta Governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama asked Irwandi to buy 1,000 high-quality carts that have to be made of stainless steel and stamped by the government. “The agency must provide hygienic carts for all Jakarta PKL. I also want the carts prioritized for flat residents,” said Ahok last November.
Late last year, Ahok also injected credit to 100 PKLs. Every PKL was given loan of Rp100 million. With the credit, PKL can increase sales and be more easily regulated.
