TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has decided to tighten its control on imported meat products and all of its derivatives from Malaysia to prevent transmission of disease.

"Malaysia is still endemic of foot and mouth disease, while Indonesia has been free of that kind of disease decades ago," said Arinaung Siregar, head of the Agricultural Quarantine Center at the Agriculture Ministry in Palembang, on Sunday, October 18, 2015.

Arinaung said that processed meat products such as sausages and jerked meat imported from Malaysia must be inspected in the Quarantine Center before it can be distributed.

"What we are most concerned about is processed beef products from Malaysia," said Arinaung.

According to Arinanung, cattle and beef improted from Malaysia iroginally came from Brazil and India. Cattle from Brazil that are infected with the mad cow disease can easily enter Malaysia.
