TEMPO.COKupang - The Fish Quarantine and Quality Control Station (KIPM) of Kupang recorded that octopus exports from East Nusa Tenggara Province to China reached 24 tons in January 2019.

"Twenty-four tons of frozen octopus were exported from Flores Island and shipped through Surabaya, East Java," Kupang KIPM Station chief Jimmy Elwaren told Antara, Friday, February 22.

He said the exporter of octopus was by PT Okishin Flores. The value was US$63,000.

Jimmy said octopus is one of the local marine products that China is starting to be interested in. The first octopus export was in 2018 with a volume of 15.8 tons.

Another fishery product exported to China in January was seaweed. Jimmy said that the seaweed was exported in the form of "alkali treated cotton chips" (ATCC) with an export value of US$96,859.

"The exported seaweed products came from Sumba Island, amounting to 75 tons," he said.
