Mt. Lokon Erupts, Manado Airport Closed

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- Sam Ratulangi airport in Manado, North Sulawesi, is closed until 1 pm Central Indonesian Time following the eruption of Mount Lokon, airport operator said Sunday, August 30.


“We have extended the closure of Sam Ratulangi airport until 1 pm on Sunday. Actually, according to the previous plan, the airport would be reopened at 9 am on Sunday,” said Public Relations office of state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I. Ilham Sakti on Sunday.


However, Ilham said that Mount Lokon continued to spew ashes, prompting the extended closure of the airport.


The Sam Ratulangi aiport was closed since 6 am Central Indonesian Time on Sunday and as of Sunday afternoon, passengers are still stranded at the airport while waiting for the information concerning the eruption of Mount Lokon.


Mount Lokon is an active volcano located in Tomohon, North Sulawesi. The volcano spewed volcanic ashes up to 1,500 meter to the east since Saturday, August 29.
