TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- President Joko Widodo said a state-owned company (BUMN) would be established if necessary to manage the country’s geothermal energy potential.

“This potential must be utilized as much as possible. The data from various experts shows that the potential of this geothermal energy reaches 25,000 megawatts (MW),” said Jokowi on Wednesday, August 19.

According to Jokowi, the government is currently has its attention to new and renewable energy, especially geothermal energy because of its large potential from Sabang to Merauke.

Besides that, even though oil price is decreasing, investors do not need to worry because this type of energy is no longer an alternative energy, amid diminishing supply of energy reserves.

“Indonesia has large potential of new and renewable energy and we believe Indonesia can achieve energy sovereignty,” he said.

Jokowi further said the target to build 35,000 megawatt will able to be achieved as long as all elements in the central government and the society can utilize this potential. He also appreciated young people who have become more aware about new and renewable energy.
