Pertamina Teams Up with AGIL to Develop Geothermal Energy in Kenya

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) partnered up with Africa Geothermal International (AGIL) to develop geothermal potential in the Longonot concession in Kenya. The MoU was inked by the Director of PGE Julfi Hadi and Board of Directors AGIL Fred N. Ojiambo.
Julfi explained that the MoU is a strategic step by PGE to develop geothermal technology and utilization abroad. According to Julfi, Longonot has the advantage of location and geological location which makes it an attractive prospect.
"Through this collaboration, PGE has the opportunity to take part in the development of new and renewable energy, as well as our efforts to become a global geothermal producer,” he said in a written statement quoted by Tempo on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.
AGIL is a subsidiary of AGIL No. 1, a limited company working in the geothermal business in Kenya, including in the Longonot concession. The concession is described to have a potential of up to 500 MW with about 140 MW ready to be exploited.
Julfi added that Africa is the new epicenter of economic growth, which will create a good investment climate. Kenya is the frontrunner in geothermal development in Africa and ranked 7th in the world.
According to Julfi, PGE and AGIL, both have capabilities and advanced experience to develop geothermal as a renewable energy. "We are hoping that this collaboration in the form of development cooperation on geothermal could boost Indonesia and Kenya's business exposure.
PGE is also optimistic that this collaboration could broaden PGE's clean energy portfolio. "And to support the reduce of GHG gas emission and fossil fuel dependency," Julfi added.
Director of PT Pertamina Nicke Widyawati who was present at the signing said that Pertamina as a state-owned-enterprise will carry the spirit of Indonesia which hosted the Asia-Africa Conference four decades ago by engaging in strategic cooperation with other countries.
"In relation to the energy transition, Pertamina's cooperations consist of business across upstream and downstream industries. We are open to all opportunities including geothermal development in Kenya," said Nicke.
