TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Surging prices of beef in the market have prompted beef vendors and slaughterhouses to go on a strike starting from Sunday, August 9, until Wednesday, August 12, 2015.
According to Almunir Muchtar, manager of the Binakarya slaughterhouse in West Jakarta, slaughterhouses were told to stop operating in relation to an agreement made by the slaughterhouse association in Jabodetabek. "We are not allowed to operate for four-days," said Muchtar.
Muchtar said that normally, he could process 30 imported cows per day to be sold to Tangerang and West Jakarta. "[The beef] costs Rp 85,000 per kilogram," Muchtar said.
Muchtar said the government must immediately resolve the ongoing beef scarcity. "I asked the government to support slaughterhouses. Hopefully the government would increase cow import quotas to prevent [beef scarcity]," Muchtar said.
