Tanzanian Woman Smuggles Heroin in Her Stomach

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- Soekarno-Hatta Airport customs official on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 have thwarted the smuggling of heroin and crystal meth by concealing it inside a Tanzanian woman’s stomach.


The woman identified only as MA, 32, is a messenger who carried the illegal substance from her country by way of swallowing dozens of heroin and crystal meth packages in the form of capsules.


“We have confiscated 32 capsules from her stomach,” Head of main service type-C Soekarno-Hatta Dwijo Muryono said in Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Wednesday.


The capsules were packed in thin plastics. MA flew with Qatar Airways flight QR-956 destinations Dar Es Saalam-Jakarta, and was apprehended when arriving in Terminal 2E International Arrival at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Saturday, July 4.


Airport officials have suspected MA’s fidgeted gesture when she exited the aircraft. The mother of two children was then taken to the examination room to be scanned by an x-ray machine. “A weird object was seen inside her stomach,” said Dwijo.


Officials then took MA to the customs office to try to take the capsules out by using laxative. “It took two days to take the capsules out from her stomach,” Dwijo said.


After undergoing lab examination, 23 capsules containing 414 grams of heroin and 9 capsules containing 126 grams of crystal meth. Those substances are estimated to worth Rp 1.08 billion, said Dwijo.


MA admitted she was promised a Rp 90 million pay for the job and will be given once she safely passed airport security.


Deputy Chief of Soekarno-Hatta Resort Police Drugs Division Adj.Comm. Subekti said the perpetrator, who is a prostitute, was asked by a Nigerian citizen to deliver the drugs to a person in a hotel in Jakarta. “The receiver is still at large and is believed to be linked with the nigerian network,” Subekti said.
