Pertalite Not Suitable for Euro 2 Standard Vehicle, says KPBB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Committee for Leaded Gasoline Eradication (KPBB) said that the newly-launched RON 90 fuel, so called Pertalite, was not suitable with vehicles in Indonesia that have applied Euro 2 standardized technology.
KPBB director Ahmad Safrudin explained that vehicles in Indonesia should use at least RON 91 fuel or Pertamax.
“We have rejected Pertalite since the beginning,” Ahmad told Tempo on Saturday, July 25, 2015.
Ahmad added that all types of vehicles have a minimum compression ratio of 9:1. Therefore, Ahmad said, using Pertalite or Premium could reduce vehicle’s useful life.
According to Ahmad, Pertamina and automotive industries are not ready yet to apply higher standards. Moreover, Pertalite was launched due to high demands on cheap fuel.
“As a result, vehicles’ quality must be degraded to meet RON 88 and RON 90 specifications,” he added.
On Friday, July 24, 2015, Pertamina commenced market trial for Pertalite in Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya. The new fuel will be sold for Rp8,700 per liter after the trial period ends. The price was set based on the oil market index in Singapore and the rupiah rate against the US dollar.
