Bojonegoro Send 8,000 Tons of Rice to Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Logistics Agency (Bulog) Regional Subdivision III Bojonegoro send at least 8,000 tonnes of rice to some regencies in Papua province, following the food crisis in the region.


For the initial shipment, 1,000 tons of rice will be sent to Timika regency, 3,000 tons to Biak and 1,000 tons each to Nabire, Manokwari, Serui, and Fak-Fak or a total of 8,000 tons.


Shipment was initiated at the beginning of July until earlier this week. Delivery may continue, especially to districts with food crises, Puncak Regency.


Head of Bulog Regional Subdivision III Efdal Sulaiman, said shipments of rice to Papua was at the request of Bulog in Jakarta. The goal, in order to supply regions in eastern Indonesia, which is experiencing food crisis.


Extreme cold weather in Papua earlier in July had claimed lives of children and infants and caused failed harvests. As a result, 21,600 families across 21 villages in six districts are facing the threat of starvation.
