TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel said that the government's decision to lower cattle import quota from is only temporary. There is no written bilateral agreement with Australia regarding beef import quota.

"No quota limit," said Gobel on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. "[Beef] import quota can be increased anytime if needed."

Gobel said that the import quota was reduced to evaluate domestic beef reserves because there was information that there are excessive beef supplies in various regions, such as in West Nusa Tenggara. "We want to evaluate the domestic stock first," Gobel said.

In addition, according to Gobel, the government is also attempting to stabilize beef price. "Supplies are abundant, but prices are not decreasing,” said Gobel.

Gobel explained that the government is currently looking for alternative beef exporting country that could sell chepaer cattles, such as India.
